Shadow of the Past by Tammy L Grace

Title: Shadows of the Past
Author: Tammy L Grace
Series: Quinn Stone #1
Main Character: Quinn Stone
Other Characters: Daniel Stone, Ethan, Jane, Dominic, Victor, Walter, Tanner Chase, Eleanor, Ryan, Colton, Selene
Genre: Political thriller  & Women’s fiction (because Quinn’s emotional journey, relationships, and personal struggles give it more depth than a typical political/action thriller)
Pets: Zephyr, Quinn’s Golden Retriever and best friend
Rating: 4

“Evil wins is when good men do nothing”

Having read and enjoyed several of Tammy L. Grace’s books, I decided to give Shadows of the Past a try, despite political thrillers and spy stories not being my usual genre. Honestly, I’m glad I did!

The story follows ex-CIA operative Quinn Stone as she is pulled back into a complex web of espionage, political danger, and long-buried secrets. Grace expertly balances action with emotional depth; Quinn’s inner struggles and the suspense surrounding the presidential candidate she is tasked with protecting kept me turning the pages. That being said, I occasionally found the large cast of characters overwhelming. There were moments when the themes of secrecy, covert operations, and political maneuvering felt repetitive, particularly in the “protecting Chase” storyline. Nonetheless, the overall tension, atmosphere, and strong female lead made for a solid and engaging read. I especially loved Quinn’s relationship with her dog, Zephyr.

Although this genre isn’t typically my preference, I found myself enjoying the journey, thanks to Tammy L. Grace’s engaging writing. It’s a gripping story that fans of political thrillers will undoubtedly enjoy!

The Uncomplicated Cafe by Rachael Bloome

Title: The Uncomplicated Cafe
Author: Rachael Bloome
Series: Blessings Bay book 4
Location: Blessings Bay
Main Character: Cece, Jace, Abby, Logan
Other Characters: Sam, Max, Stacy, Gretchen, Verna, Sage, Iris, Paul
Pets: Cece’s cat Spock (Yes, she is a Star Trek fan)
Rating: 5

“Aqua is my favorite color of sea glass. According to legend, it’s the color most coveted by mermaids and is thought to bring good luck.”

Rachael has once again captivated us with “The Uncomplicated Cafe.” Her storytelling draws you in and makes you fall in love with the characters. Visiting Blessing Bay feels like returning home to catch up with old friends.

I thoroughly enjoyed Cece and Jayce’s story. Their friendship began in childhood in Blessing Bay, but now Jayce is a big Hollywood star, while Cece remains in Blessing Bay, running her own bakery. There have always been sparks between them, so when Jayce asks Cece to fake an engagement for a publicity stunt, she hesitantly agrees. What starts as a pretense soon evolves into something much deeper, filled with lingering touches and nearly kisses that feel anything but fake.

Although I absolutely adore Cece and Jayce, it was Abby and Logan’s story that truly tugged at my heartstrings. From the very beginning, I have loved Abby and Logan, especially their relationship with their foster son, Max. They form such a beautiful family, but a surprise visitor at the Bed & Breakfast threatens their happiness and creates drama leading up to their wedding. This situation becomes quite emotional as they navigate the challenges to find a resolution that works for everyone involved.

Rachael has a talent for crafting heartwarming stories that explore small-town romance, second chances, and family dynamics, captivating readers from the very first page. Whenever I pick up a book by Rachael Bloome, I know I’m in for a treat.

Just a warning: Have your tissues ready for this heart-wrenching story of slow-burn romance, second chances, love, faith, hope, surprises, and determination.

I recommend reading this series in order to fully appreciate and understand each character.

This is the twelfth book in the South Carolina Series, the series that initially hooked me on Rachel Hanna’s works, starting with the first book, The Beach House.

Once again, she delivers with Serenity at Seagrove! This heartwarming installment weaves together themes of healing, second chances, and love, all set against the picturesque backdrop of Seagrove.

Luna Mason’s journey to establish a wellness center and find her place in the community is truly inspiring. Her compassion and determination make it easy to support her success. Location: Birmingham, AL & Nashville, TN
Main Character: Andi Allen, Dawson Gage,
Other Characters:  London, Jenny, Jim, Louise, Larry, Matt, David
Pets: Toby, London’s Labrador Retriever
Rating: 5

This is the first book I have read by Karen Kingsbury but it won’t be the last.  I read this book after seeing the movie. The movie was so moving and emotional that I just had to read the book and I am really glad that I did.

The book I read was revised to align more closely with the movie, so some of the names may have been changed in that version.

This book will truly tug at your heartstrings. It follows Andi Allen, who learns she was adopted as an embryo after a stranger reveals the truth about her past. Initially, Andi struggles to believe him, but her parents eventually confirm it. This shocking revelation shakes her to the core, prompting her to leave her job, fiancé, and adoptive family to journey to Birmingham, AL in search of her true identity.

As she connects with her biological family, she discovers she has a sister she never knew about, adding to her confusion. Dawson Gage, a stranger, helps Andi learn about her biological family and the sister she will never meet.  Andi’s faith, along with Dawson’s support, helps her navigate her journey home. He guides her as she seeks to uncover her true identity. The novel beautifully weaves together themes of forgiveness, healing, and the transformative power of love.

This book is incredibly touching; it had me both crying and smiling at the same time. If you enjoy a beautifully written tearjerker with a wonderful story, I highly recommend this book.

Be sure to read the Producer’s notes at the end of the book, which explains how this book was adapted into a movie.

Main Character: Shelby

Rating: 5

Rachel has once again delivered with “Christmas on Waverly Lane.” As the second installment in the Waverly Lane series, it continues to captivate. While it’s uncertain if more books will follow, I sincerely hope they do. I’m completely hooked on this community and their friendships, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

From the very first page, I was captivated by the heartwarming stories of Shelby, Reed, Cami, Lacy, Joan, and Willadeene. Rachel  has a way of weaving together the lives of these characters, making the reader feel as if you are  part of their close-knit community. Shelby and Reed’s Christmas wedding is beautifully depicted, even though it didn’t quite go as planned, it couldn’t have been more perfect. Cami’s journey of starting over is both inspiring and relatable. Lacy’s exciting news and Joan’s preparations for her first family Christmas in years add layers of joy and anticipation to the story. And of course, Willadeene, who has an unexpected and unwanted guest, is always a delight who adds a touch of humor. These women are willing to do anything for each other. Since reading the first book in her Poppy Creek Series, I have loved this author. This most recent series, Blessings Bay, does not disappoint. This is the second book in the Blessings Bay Series and I loved catching up with Logan and Abby along with several new characters that were introduced.

The unexpeted Inn leaves you wanting to visit but be warned—you might not want to leave. The characters are intriguing and well-developed. • Genre: Romance, Drama
  • Takes Place: Sullivan’s Crossing
  • Main Character: Sierra, Connie (Conrad), Sullivan
  • Other Characters: Cal, Maggie
  • Pets: Molly

In this installment of the series Sullivan’s Crossing, we meet Cal’s sister Sierra. If you remember from the first book, What we find, Cal is a drifter who eventually marries Sully’s daughter, Maggie. They are now having a baby and Cal’s little sister, Sierra, comes for a visit.

Sierra is escaping a troubled past and hoping it doesn’t catch up to her. She finds solace with the residents of the small Colorado town and Sullivan’s crossing. I love her bond with Sully who ends up being a surrogate dad. Then there is Connie (Conrad) who helps her move on from her troubled past. Her bond with her brother just grows stronger and she begins developing a sisterly bond with Cal’s wife, Maggie.

This is a story of starting over, family, building relationships, and learning that your past doesn’t define your future. Then there is the rescue dog that Sierra adopts. Sierra saves Molly from an abusive situation and she becomes the therapy that Sierra needs. Everyone falls in love with Molly, even the readers.

Between Connie, Sully, Cal & Maggie, Sierra finally finds the family she needs.

I love this book. I love the location, the characters and, of course the dog. The author really knows how to describe the scenery as if you are there and the characters so you really know them. This book is definitely worth reading and now I can’t wait to read book #3.
